Together for rescue
Throughout October and November, I join on Humanity 1 vessel of the German NGO Sos Humanity. The rescue mission took place at the dawn of the beginning of the new Italian government headed by Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right party "Fratelli d'Italia" and with clear positions in opposition to welcoming and opening ports to NGOs. The mission rescued 179 people of Egyptian, Pakistani and Gambian origin for a total of 40 days on board. It took as many as 18 place-of-safety requests before Italy granted a place to disembark the rescued people, also pressed by an increasingly insistent media impact. The disembarkation, which occurred at two separate times, saw a desperate attempt by a government that at all costs wanted to stop the landings and deny the basic human rights that every individual enjoys, whatever their condition.
